Schedule of Worship Services and Classes

Our doors are open again for in-person worship services and classes. Our times are listed below. We offer masks and gloves for your convenience when you walk in the door. Our communion at this time is a portable communion cup with unleavend bread as well in a baggie that are placed on the back table to be picked up as you come in. We have a box in the back also for your monetary gift for God for your convenience. There are no passing of trays. We sanitize handles, pews, and song books after the morning service and evening service. We do our best to see to it that your worship with us is as safe as we can make it.

We also still offer conference calling to join in our classes and worship for those of you who are unable to attend and are being very cautious during this pandemic. 541-249-5794....no passcode is required.

Services are congregational, following the pattern of worship as given in the New Testament. Singing is acappella and the Lords Supper is observed every first day of the week with individual cups of grape juice and unleavened bread. Dress style is casual. Our emphasis is on Christ centered worship! We hope that you find our congregation warm and inviting and hope that you will return to worship with us again!

Though we are a small congregation we are involved locally as the Ladies run a series of Bible classes at a couple of the local nursing homes. Additionally the congregaton has been supporting a couple of  Childrens' Homes here in the US and abroad missionary work:

The Mountain States Childrens Home in Longmont, Colorado

Missionary work of Dan Goodyear of the Southwest Church of Christ and his trips            to sister congregations in Africa.

Drought relief for the Sakubva Church of Christ in Zimbabwe, Africa

WE LOVE VISITORS! What do we expect from you? Nothing at all! You are welcome to participate, but don’t feel obligated to. Just observe if that is your choice. We want you to be comfortable, so here's an idea of what you can expect at our Sunday morning services:

GOD-CENTERED WORSHIP

One of the first things you may notice about our worship services is that only men lead it. (Please refer to 1Timothy 2:12 or 1Corinthians 14:35.) The women of our church teach children in our classes but do not have authority over the men during worship. Every part of our worship centers on praising, uplifting, and exploring God in the way that He has directed in the New Testament. In doing this, we engage in worship that includes simply what we find in the New Testament descriptions of early Christian worship.

SINGING

Every time we gather, we lift our voices together in praise to God. Our songs are chosen to express to God our admiration and to teach and encourage each other. There will be a hymnbook near your seat for your use. When the song leader announces a number, you can turn to that page number in the hymnbook to find the words and music. One of the unique things about the churches of Christ – and something you may find strange – is that the music is “a cappella.” That is, we sing without the accompaniment of musical instruments. As instructed in Col 3:16. This is a conviction with us, not just a preference. We are seeking to worship according to the New Testament pattern. Since the New Testament does not specifically authorize music in worship, we simply believe it’s best to exclude it as well. We think you’ll find the singing meaningful, and everyone is invited to participate.

PRAYER

During our prayers we approach God with respect, love, and wonder. We believe that a relationship with God depends on prayer and that our church must be a praying church in order to truly be connected to Him.

COMMUNION

This is a memorial celebration that we engage in every first day of the week. Again, the reason for this is our desire to follow the pattern of the early church. Just as they did, we follow the model of Christ's last supper, during which He commanded His followers to remember His death through the drinking of "the fruit of the vine" (grape juice) and "the breaking of bread" (unleavened). We remember Christ's blood as we drink and Christ's body as we eat (see 1Corinthians 11:23-26). This "meal" is a remembrance of the sacrifice Christ made for all people through his death on the cross, and a celebration of the hope of heaven we now have as a result.  Each participant will drink the contents of one of the cups. If you choose not to participate, don’t be embarrassed. Feel free to just pass the plate to the person next to you.

GIVING

Following observation of the Lords Supper we will 'pass a plate' and our members are encouraged to give as they have prospered and to partner with one another and with God by giving money to enable the church's work in the world. 1 Cor 16:2. The work we do, focuses on showing Christ to the world and helping those in need. As our guest, you are not expected to make a donation--but please feel free to fill out a 'visitor's card and place it in the plate as it comes by!

PREACHING

During this part of the service, our minister will direct us in a study of God's Word. We strive to present lessons that are Bible-based, challenging, and relevant. You will notice that the preacher doesn’t have a title. He won’t be referred to as “Pastor” or “Reverend” and he won’t be wearing any ecclesiastical vestments because the Bible teaches that all of us are equal (see Galatians 3:26-28). You will be able to sit quietly and follow in your own Bible as the lesson is presented. We believe the scriptures are sufficient for all teaching and we do not appeal to human creeds because 2Timothy 3:16 says, “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for corrections, for training in righteousness.” The typical sermon will likely las about 30 minutes.  We think you will find it is refreshingly Bible-centered. If you have any questions about the lesson, feel free to talk to the minister afterwards. He is always happy to answer questions or discuss the topic more deeply.

Come worship with us and experience God’s love as we worship and serve Him!

THE INVITATION

At the close of the sermon, the preacher will extend, or offer, an invitation. This is simply a convenient time to ask if there is anyone who wishes to make a commitment or request prayer support. Those who wish to “respond” can come to the front of the auditorium while the congregation sings a hymn. You will not be singled out in any way or expected to respond. There may be several who respond, or none at all.  Some may respond for baptism, or some to confess sins, or some to ask for prayers for a specific need, or some to “identify” or “place membership” with this congregation.

BAPTISM

If anyone responds for baptism, you will be able to witness the baptism that same day. The baptism will be by “burying” the person in water (Acts 8:35-38), symbolic of Christ’s burial and resurrection, and it will be for the remission of sins (see Acts 2:38, Mark 16:16, 1Peter 3:21, and the book of Acts is full of examples of those who were converted to the truth and were immediately baptized).

GOD-FEARING PEOPLE.

When you visit the Westside church of Christ in Hermiston, you'll meet people with different backgrounds, different personalities, different careers, and different family dynamics. We are all at different stages of knowledge and spiritual growth. We don’t know everything. We don’t do everything right. We haven’t arrived--we’re just on the journey. But, you see, we were not brought together by an illusion of our perfection or righteousness. We were brought together by our recognition that we are sinners in need of the cleansing blood of Jesus, as Jesus said in Mark 2:17, “And hearing this, Jesus said to them, ‘It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.’” That’s the reason we can worship together, stick together, and, with God’s help, accomplish some things that make a difference. You won’t have to look very far to find our failures.  But, bottom line, you will find people who love Jesus and love the Bible. We hope you'll also notice how connected our members are to one another. The church here is truly a family. We help one another in tough times and celebrate with one another in good times. We are all willing to make sacrifices for one another because of the sacrifice God made for us.

GOD-FOCUSED STUDY.

We'd love for you to join us for Bible study on Sunday mornings or mid week to refresh our minds and refocus on Wednesday evenings

KIDS

Our children receive a thorough education in what it means to know and serve God. From birth through high school, students are introduced to the personalities, stories, and life lessons contained in their Bibles.

Teachers are full of creativity, patience, and love, and our curriculum is set up and tailored to meet the needs of the students depending on age and maturity.
